Byrd/Obey Op-Ed

Senator Robert "Exalted Cyclops" Byrd and Representative David Obey implore Bush to pass the funding measure that congress will send. The funding bill includes withdrawing US troops in 2008, as has been widely reported (though the details depend on whether the House or Senate version prevails--the House version would require faster withdrawal depending on certain conditions).

The letter ignores progress in Baghdad. More importantly, it ignores the consequences of taking the hegemon (i.e., US armed forces) out of the country before the nascent democratic government can defend itself. Anyone honest with themselves knows there will be unprecedented violence and ethnic/sectarian cleansing on a massive scale. Whether you were for or against the invasion, the reality now is that we broke it, we fix it. When we learned about Rwanda, we all said, "Never again." Well, now those words will be tested. And this time, we had a hand in making the mess. We are responsible.
